A handy way to prepare for some pool fun, even if it’s in your own backyard, is to pack a pool bag. This is also a good idea if you’re going to a friend’s pool, a nearby public pool, or a swimming competition. Regardless of what your particular pool-using plans are, here’s a brief rundown of what you should pack in your pool bag, brought to you by the helpful team from San Diego Pools, the San Diego pool builder you can trust for high-quality construction and exceptional service.
First, put whatever you’ll be wearing while you swim in your bag. If you happen to be going to a competition, it’s better to go with something more form-fitting to cut down on water resistance. For casual pool-related gatherings, feel free to go with swimwear that’s more colorful and in line with your personal preferences.
These particular accessories are generally optional for many pool users. However, if you’ll be swimming competitively or you have issues with water getting into your eyes, ears, and nose, you may prefer to pack all three items. Goggles, earplugs, and nose plugs can be especially beneficial for younger swimmers who aren’t accustomed to using proper breathing and head-turning techniques while swimming.
A big beach towel is great if you have plenty of space to carry it and spread it out when you get to the pool. But if space is somewhat limited, either at the pool or in your bag, consider rolling up a few smaller towels instead. It can also be helpful to have a towel that’s absorbent so you can dry off quickly between dips and laps.
This may seem counterproductive because most people don’t get too hot while they’re in cold pool water. Still, it’s easier than you might expect to become dehydrated when swimming, playing pool games, or randomly lounging in or by the pool. Stay safe and sufficiently hydrated by slipping a reusable water bottle into your pool bag.
It’s not uncommon for most people to take smartphones and other electronics with them when hanging out. This also applies to pool-related fun as well as swimming competitions. Waterproof cases work well for smaller objects like phones, but they’re just as useful for eyeglasses and sunglasses. Depending on how close you’ll be to the water, you may also want to stash your wallet or purse in a waterproof case in your pool bag.
Even if you’re enjoying the pool on a cloudy day or later in the afternoon, err on the side of caution and bring some sunscreen. A small bottle of sunscreen doesn’t take up too much space in a pool bag. It’s especially beneficial on sunny days, since prolonged exposure to UV rays can contribute to skin cancer and other health-related problems. Sunscreen is typically best applied every few hours or so when you’re outdoors and using a pool.
