Can I Swim Every Day Safely?

Not everybody prefers intense forms of exercise like running, jogging, or active involvement in contact sports that could leave them wiped out, sore, and/or injured when done. Fortunately, swimming is a perfect happy medium, since it’s a great form of exercise that has a low impact on the body. If you have a pool or you’re getting ready to invest in one, you may be wondering if it’s okay to swim every day. The professionals from San Diego Pools, the experts in pool installation San Diego residents rely on for extraordinary quality and outstanding service, discuss the answer to this question and some of the other things you need to know about regular swimming.

Daily Swimming Is Fine, but Have a Plan in Mind

You can certainly swim every single day if you have a desire to do so, especially in the San Diego area, where temperatures tend to be pleasant pretty much year-round. That being said, it’s best to vary your swim routine. Trying to be Michael Phelps constantly could increase your risk of unintentionally overworking or overstressing joints and supporting muscles.

Put Together a Swim Routine

If you do wish to swim each day, don’t be random about it. You’ll be more likely to reap the many rewards of regular swimming if you put together a swim routine based on what’s good and safe for your body. Here’s an example of a routine to give you an idea of what to consider:

• Monday – Endurance swimming with your preferred stroke

• Tuesday – An individual medley that targets multiple muscle groups with four different strokes: breaststroke, freestyle stroke, butterfly stroke, and backstroke

• Wednesday – Speed work that focuses on technique and efficiency so you see gradual improvements as you swim

• Thursday – A relaxing recovery swim where you go at your own pace to give your various muscle groups a chance to relax and recover

• Friday – Drill sets that allow you to practice your technique and improve efficiency

• Weekends – For the weekend, go back to the preferred stroke from Monday or mix things up with an individual medley

While it’s fine to swim each day, you don’t have to commit to a full seven-day swim routine. For instance, you could adjust the sample routine above and do the weekend part on Saturdays only. You can then use Sundays to take a break from the pool or casually swim just to relax.

Determine Your Goals

If you plan to swim with purpose, set goals for yourself regarding what you hope to accomplish with daily swimming. For instance, you might want to complement what you’re doing with your land-based forms of exercise or simply increase flexibility and muscle strength. Knowing what you hope to accomplish ahead of time makes it easier to make appropriate adjustments to your routine.

Embrace the Perks of Regular Swimming, but Talk to your Doctor

Regular swimming has numerous benefits, some of which include toning muscles, boosting heart and lung health, maintaining a healthy weight, building endurance and strength, and easing stress. However, check with your doctor if you have underlying health issues that may need to be considered.
